James Mowat is an elementary school serving students from ECS to grade 6. The school day is broken into 30 minute periods. We offer the regular elementary program with French as a Second Language offered for 4 periods a week starting in grade 4.
We have a Character Education Program which focuses on a "Word of the Month". This program is designed to help students learn characteristics that will help them to succeed both academically and socially. It also gives a common focus and a common language which is used by the staff and students when discussing school expectations for behavior.
Extra assistance is provided to grades 1-6 through our Learning Support (LS) program. The LS program provides students who have a delay in language arts with a pull out program where students receive small group instruction outside the regular classroom. Students in the LS program are integrated for the rest of the school day. A wide variety of extra-curricular activities are available for students who choose to participate (examples include choir, safety patrols, school council, track teams, intra-murals, etc.). Information on these can be found in the monthly newsletters as the activities are organized.
A Speech Therapist comes to the school once a week to provide assistance to students with speech, language and hearing difficulties.
